HealthPhone: Body Warmth - Sakhi Dadi - Hindi UP

Hindiहिन्दी - Mānak Hindī - Hindi
India, South Africa, Nepal

The baby should be kept warm after birth, preferably by putting the baby in its mother's arms and chest. Have the mother wrap a baby next to her skin between her breasts to use her own body heat to keep the baby the same temperature.

Using the kangaroo model, newborns are wrapped to their mother's chests. They nestle there both day and night, held by the fabric fashioned into a warm 'pouch'. Snuggled against their mother's familiar skin, the baby's body temperature stabilises, their heart rate steadies and they begin to breathe more easily. The loving and close relationship which is formed between mother and child encourages the little ones to survive.

This process encourages the babies to start controlling their own body temperature and warmth, and also strengthens the emotional bond between mother and child.
